Experiences
Here Harald Hårfagre laid one of his royal farms. The princes who controlled the old "Nordvegen" have left behind powerful traces: towering burial mounds, high tombstones and rich finds. At the beautiful medieval church there is a rich history center and to the east of the church there is a reconstructed Viking farm!
Olav's Church
The medieval church was built by King Håkon Håkonsen as part of the royal farm complex. He dedicated the church to Olav the Holy, and the church at Avaldsnes became an important stop for pilgrims going to Nidaros.
Nordvegen History Centre
The Nordvegen History Center is located in an important national historic area and most of the building is underground. You enter Mime's well, the source of knowledge, and meet national collector Harald Hårfagre, who guides you through a 3,500-year-long history of Avaldsnes as the meeting place between Norway and Europe. You can take part in exciting tasks for the family with the activity program "Viking for a day" and "Archaeologist for a day".
The Viking farm
At the reconstructed Viking farm, you learn how our ancestors built houses and how the Vikings lived. In summer, you will meet Viking warriors and housewives and you can take part in challenging Viking activities.
Event
Western Norway's largest Viking festival is held here annually, Thursday to Sunday, the first full week of June."Vikings" from all over Europe gather here. Historic surroundings, great handicrafts, market and activities create a wonderful atmosphere around the event. In the summer of 2017, the Kongsgård Project excavated the ruins of the royal estate that stood at Avaldsnes in the High Middle Ages. Thus, the stage is set for the annual medieval festival! There will be a good atmosphere here with medieval tunes, jugglers, medieval tastes, a cafe and a tour of the royal estate area. Our rich cultural heritage forms the basis for exciting events at Avaldsnes. Groups are offered historic Viking feasts, exciting storytelling and intimate concerts in Olavskirken. www.visitkarmoy.no
